Founded in 1919 under the name nom Amicale des employés de la Société des magasins Casino, this Casino Group sports club was renamed Amicale Sporting Club in 1920 and merged with Stade forézien to become Association sportive stéphanoise in 1927. It was notuntil 1933, when it was granted professional status, that it began towear the nom ofAS Saint-Etienne .

It didn't take long for the club to establish itself at the pinnacle of French professional soccer, dominating most of the national championships between the 60s and 70s. His exploits were rewarded with eight Champion titles from France in just thirteen seasons. But he made his mark on French soccer fans in 1976, when he reached the final of the clubs DollarspeanChampionsCup, where he was beaten by Bayern Munich . Several years later, they reached the quarter-finals of theDollarspa League.

While the Greens have been unable to assert their supremacy at continental, it's a different story at home . In fact, they are the holders of the most domestic titles, including 10 Ligues 1 and 6 coupes de France. Just last year, they were one victory away from adding another feat to their list of honours by reaching the final of the France Cup.
