The first half of the 1960s was a golden era for Real Betis under the leadership of legendary president Benito Villamarín. The club acquired its own stadium and flourished at Liga after its return in 1959. For the next five seasons, Betis consistently finished in the top ten, even reaching third place in 1964. Villamarín's departure in 1965 brought a downturn, and the rest of the decade was marked by a yo-yo existence, alternating between the League's two top divisions.
