While the 1970s followed on from the 1980s, the new decade heralded the start of a new and exciting era for AS Roma. Returning for a second season, visionary Swedish coach Nils Liedholm was beginning to build a balanced team with the talents of winger Bruno Conti, midfielder Agostino Di Bartolomei and prolific striker Roberto Pruzzo. Roma finished a respectable sixth in Serie A and the season ended with a win with captain Sergio Santarini lifting the Coppa Italia following a penalty shootout victory over Torino. Carlo Ancelotti scored the decisive penalty and Roberto Pruzzo was the tournament's top scorer.
