In the early 80s, Stade rennais yo-yoed between the top two divisions of the France championship. Champion from Ligue 2 in 1983 but relegated to Ligue 1 the following season, Pierre Mosca's team began the 1984-85 season with the ambition of returning to the elite. A good campaign saw the club qualify for the end-of-season play-offs. Saint-Etienne and Mulhouse both lost, allowing the club to qualify for the end-of-season play-offs against Rouen, the club from Ligue 1. Both teams won their home matches 1-0, which meant a penalty shoot-out. After Rennes goalkeeper Pierrick Hiard had saved two attempts, Alain Doare scored the decisive penalty at 7-6, allowing Rennes to return to the top flight.
