In the early 80s, Stade rennais yo-yoed between the top two divisions of the France championship. Champion from Ligue 2 in 1983 but relegated to Ligue 1 the following season, Pierre Mosca's team began the 1984-85 season with the ambition of returning to the elite. A good campaign saw the club qualify for the end-of-season play-offs.
