After leadingAS Roma to fourth place the previous season with a flurry of goals, Czech coach Zdenek Zeman hoped to take his team even higher in the Serie A standings at the start of the 1998-99 season. Once again, there was great attacking soccer and plenty of goals from strikers Marco Delvecchio, Francesco Totti and Paulo Sergio, who scored 42 goals between them, but too many goals conceded at the other end of the field cost dearly and Roma finished the season in fifth place, one point away from qualifying for the Ligue des champions.
