Chilean coach Fernando Riera took over the reins this season following the famous Béla Guttmann and had a mixed season by Benfica standards in the early 1960s, with the Portuguese title having been won in some ways with Torres's goals (23 wins and just one defeat in 26 games) for Benfica. However, Taca de Portugal's hopes were dashed by Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals and, critically, the Lisbon giants failed to win their third consecutive European Cup when they lost the final at Wembley to Milan.
